All goal seeking and Results focused organisations which are staffed by several people, normally establish an organisation of accountabilities to clarify roles and results to be produced.

The simple organisation is a functional structure:

The multi business organisation may establish business units to serve different market segments due to product difference or service difference or even geographical differences.

The extent of independence/autonomy of operation of the Business units may vary too, depending on a number of variables – maturity of the business, capability of the staff and difference in organisation culture of the operations.

The variables that are considered when developing organisation structures (accountability for results) are:-

  1. Product/Service difference.
  2. Customer needs.
  3. Geographical and Cultural differences.
  4. Cost Structures.
  5. Quality people and competency needs.
  6. Accounting and task consideration.
  7. Margin or profit determination considerations.
  8. Equipment utilisation such as in the product of products using two different type of technology.
  9. Mission differences as in the case of customer satisfaction or engineering precision.
  10. Service level delivery as in the case of Audit department reporting to the Board of Directors compared to customer satisfaction at the front desk (customers are walk-in consumers).
