A competency is an underlying characteristic of an individual that is causally related to criterion-referenced superior performance in a job or situation. Underlying characteristic means the competency is a fairly deep and enduring part of a person’s personality and can predict behaviour. Causally related means that a competency causes or predicts behaviour and performance

Each job requires specific competency and it has standardized requirement to perform specific role. Competency is a predisposition to behave in ways shown to be associated with getting successful outcomes. It underlies and defines patterns in an individual’s observable behaviour on the job by which individual is demonstrably related to superior performance in a job.

Do Technical Skills Can Differentiate Average Performer and Superior Performer

Rather technical knowledge is an expected basic requirement for performing the job. Detailed comparisons of managers and leaders across different functions, different industries and different cultures reveal that superior performing managers of all types and levels share a general profile of behavioural competencies.

Superior performer uses the traits of system thinking and emotional intelligence that enable them to perform effective action within a certain workplace environment. Approachs in developing competency require to create job person match competency which is based on four techniques.
